Majolica, or maiolica, is a type of Italian tin-glazed earthenware dating back to the Renaissance period, famed for its vibrant colours and narrative painted scenes.

Majolica pieces are crafted from buff earthenware clay, coated with an opaque white tin glaze, and hand-painted with metallic oxide pigments before being fired.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit age-related crazing, hand-brushwork inconsistencies, historical kiln marks on the unglazed base, and rich mineral pigment saturation.

Position the piece as a focal point on a large timber dining table or sideboard, allowing its colourful classical motifs to contrast against neutral or minimalist surroundings.

Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust, avoid abrasive cleaners or immersion in water, and keep the piece away from direct, prolonged sunlight to protect the glaze.
