Description

A gorgeous early Victorian rosewood side table, made in England and dating from around the 1840-1860 period.

It is of extremely fine quality and is a very useful size. The rosewood has a stunning colour tone and wonderful grain patterns, the top has a beautiful pierced brass gallery around the edges. There are two drawers with lovely original green paper lining, the top drawer is a regular shape, the lower drawer has a stunning fabric design on the outside, and dips down into a lovely inverted arch shape. This was originally intended as a work table but it makes a beautiful occasional side table. The base is beautifully carved and sits on brass casters. This is nicely finished on all sides, so can be used as a free standing table.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is just some minor wear here and there, and a lovely overall patina.

The wood is Santos rosewood, which does not require a CITES or article 10.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

Victorian furniture encompasses styles produced during the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901), characterised by a revival of historicism, heavy use of dark dense woods like rosewood and mahogany, and intricate craftsmanship.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid and veneered timbers such as rosewood, walnut, and mahogany, frequently accented with brass galleries, silk or fabric bag components, and turned wooden stretchers.

Authentic items feature period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, traditional wood screws, natural patination on the timber, and authentic brass hardware without modern manufacturing marks.

Pairing historical timber pieces with minimalist upholstery and modern lighting creates a balanced scheme, allowing the rich grain and intricate details to serve as a focal point.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying a specialist beeswax polish to nourish the grain.
