Victorian card tables gained popularity during the 19th century as domestic socialising and parlour games became central to middle and upper-class home life.

Cabinet makers typically utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany and rosewood, frequently incorporating hand-carved details and baize-lined folding surfaces.

Authentic pieces exhibit period joinery methods, such as hand-cut dovetails, traditional French polish finishes, and weight-appropriate timber density without modern fixings.

Placing the table against a wall in a living space with the top folded down provides a functional surface, while offering an extendable option when hosting guests.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, using microfibre cloths for dusting, and occasionally applying natural beeswax to nourish the wood.
