FAQs

An envelope card table is a clever multi-flap folding table designed for games, featuring triangular leaves that swivel and fold over to form a square top. They gained immense popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian periods as versatile salon and drawing room furniture.

These tables are traditionally constructed from dense hardwoods like rosewood or mahogany, often embellished with intricate boxwood or satinwood marquetry and brass hardware. The complex folding mechanism relies on precision joinery to allow the four flaps to open simultaneously.

Authenticity is identified by examining the timber grain, hand-cut dovetails in the drawers, traditional patina, and the mechanics of the pivoting wooden leaves. Genuine period pieces will show natural oxidisation, hand-applied polish, and period-appropriate brass castors.

An antique envelope table works effectively as an occasional accent piece in a living room, home study, or reception hallway, topped with a simple ceramic bowl or table lamp. Its rich timber tones add warmth and historic character when contrasted against contemporary neutral walls.

Preserve antique rosewood by keeping it out of direct sunlight to prevent fading and maintaining stable indoor humidity levels to avoid wood splitting. Clean only with a soft, dry cloth and periodically nourish the timber with traditional beeswax polish, avoiding modern silicone-based sprays.
