FAQs

A Swedish root bowl is a traditional Scandinavian vessel hand-carved from the dense root burls of trees, historically used for domestic food preparation and storage in rural households.

These bowls are traditionally carved from green wood using native hardwoods such as birch, ash, or pine burls, utilising adzes and gouges before being allowed to dry and age naturally.

Authentic pieces exhibit tool marks from hand-carving, natural shrinkage cracks, historical wear patterns, and an oxidised patina gained from decades of domestic use.

They work well as sculptural centrepieces on dining tables, consoles, or coffee tables, displayed empty to highlight the organic grain and natural form.

Keep wooden bowls away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and occasionally treat the wood with food-safe mineral oil or beeswax to prevent drying and cracking.
