Refectory tables originated in medieval monasteries where monks gathered for communal meals, traditionally characterised by long, narrow proportions and sturdy wooden construction.

These pieces are typically constructed from dense native hardwoods such as oak, yew, or elm, often combined with hand-forged iron or steel structural elements.

Authentic period pieces display traditional joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints, hand-planed surfaces, and natural oxidisation appropriate to the age of the wood.

Pairing a heavy timber table with contemporary minimalist seating and streamlined lighting creates a balanced contrast between organic textures and modern design.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft cloth and occasionally applying natural beeswax, avoiding direct sunlight and excessive moisture to prevent warping.
