Description

I was sold this beautifully made item as a "bosuns persuader", but I personally think it was a Beagle huntsman's small crop and priest...it is nicely made with a malacca shaft and "turks" knot over the weighted end, with a "whip" end leather thong to the opposite end.... in very good condition...

English. C1860-80.

A priest is a traditional weighted club or bat historically used in field sports to dispatch fish or game swiftly and humanely.

Authentic pieces typically feature shafts made from malacca cane, weighted internal cores of lead, and outer coverings of braided leather, whalebone, or cord.

Authenticity is determined by genuine patina on the malacca wood, hand-braided cord or leather work showing period wear, and traditional weight distribution consistent with Victorian manufacturing techniques.

Such pieces integrate well into traditional study or library displays, often mounted on bespoke stands or curated within cabinet collections alongside other equestrian or angling memorabilia.

Maintain pieces in stable indoor humidity conditions away from direct sunlight, occasionally treating dry leather components with museum-grade conservation wax.
