FAQs

Horse brasses and martingales originated as protective amulets and decorative ornaments affixed to working horse harnesses in Britain, particularly during the 19th century.

Authentic pieces are typically crafted from hand-stitched harness leather, cast brass amulets, and often feature stamped maker marks or regional insignia.

Authenticity is indicated by heavy cast brass with natural patination, hand-tooled heavy leather, and maker stamps or town names associated with historical saddlers.

These pieces can be mounted vertically on walls within a study or hallway to introduce textural interest, heritage character, and traditional equestrian motifs.

Preservation requires cleaning leather with specialist saddlery balm and maintaining the brass with gentle dry polishing to protect the historic metal surface.
