The George II period, spanning from 1727 to 1760, is characterised by a transition from heavier walnut designs to the widespread adoption of rich mahogany, featuring graceful curves, cabriole legs, and pad or claw-and-ball feet.

These pieces were crafted primarily from dense tropical hardwoods like Cuban or Honduran mahogany, utilising traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon frames, hand-cut dovetails, and sturdy hinge mechanisms for folding leaves.

Authentic items exhibit period-appropriate tool marks, such as pit sawing on secondary timbers, oxidised patination, hand-forged iron or brass fixings, and timber shrinkage consistent with eighteenth-century age.

This piece works effectively when contrasted with modern seating or placed in a traditional dining space to add historical warmth and functional versatility due to its folding leaves.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent splitting, and treat periodically with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
