A very good quality made late 19thc corkscrew....it has a finely turned handle , made out of the finest lignum vitae and the maker has cleverly inserted the steel "screw" through the heartwood, so you get the full effect of the two colours of the darker hardwood and the lighter sapwood..... it is finished off with finely polished steel for the screw....it still retains the original badger hair bristles for dusting off the bottles....excellent colour and patination.

Treen refers to small, functional wooden household objects made by turning or carving, which became highly collectable decorative items during the Victorian era.

These implements typically combined dense hardwoods such as lignum vitae or boxwood with forged steel worms and occasionally brass or bristle brush attachments.

Authenticity is determined by hand-turned wooden components showing natural patination, hand-forged steel worms with characteristic tool marks, and traditional construction methods typical of the period.

Small antique collectables like treen corkscrews add historical texture and curated character when displayed on a bar cart, sideboard top, or within open shelving units.

Preservation involves storing items in stable humidity conditions, avoiding direct sunlight, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to wood and mineral oil to steel to prevent rust.
