Description

A nicely made mid 19thc rosewood page turner.....what really makes this rather special is the impressive coat of arms on the handle...it shows two keys with a sword going through the centre of them, two chevrons in between flowers....the sword is usually a symbol of military honour, power and freedom.....the key usually signifies knowledge....the chevrons represent the foot of the house, derived from the french word "chevron" meaning rafter and given to someone who has participated in some notable building enterprise and finally the flowers represent hope and joy....we can all use some of that..! The page turner is in excellent condition with a very good natural colour.

English. C1840-60.

FAQs

Treen refers to small, functional wooden household and personal objects made by hand or on a lathe, which became highly collectible during the Victorian era for their craftsmanship and everyday utility.

Page turners from the 19th century were typically crafted from dense exotic hardwoods such as rosewood and ebony, as well as bone, ivory, horn, and tortoiseshell.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate hand-carving techniques, natural patina from handling, dense grain structures consistent with historical timber, and signs of genuine age and wear rather than mechanical perfection.

Positioning a carved wooden page turner flat on a desk surface, atop a stack of vintage volumes, or displayed on a small stand brings textural warmth and historical character to a modern workspace.

Preservation requires keeping wooden items out of direct sunlight and away from extreme humidity fluctuations, applying microcrystalline wax occasionally, and dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth.
