Description

A wonderful antique Regency period mahogany side table. This was made in England, it dates from around 1800-1820.

It is of lovely quality, with the rectangular top sitting on a tripod base. We believe the top and base are right, this was at one stage a tilt top table, the catch and release mechanism has been removed at some point, it is now a fixed top table.

We have had this re-polished, it is in very good condition for its age, with normal wear and patina seen beneath the polish, commensurate for age.

FAQs

Regency furniture, spanning roughly from 1811 to 1820, drew heavily on classical Greco-Roman motifs, featuring clean lines, dark woods like mahogany, and understated elegance compared to the preceding ornate Georgian styles.

Cabinetmakers predominantly utilised solid mahogany, rosewood, and occasionally satinwood, often incorporating hand-turned central pedestals and tripod legs for structural stability.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct joinery, hand-cut dovetails or traditional pegging, natural patination from age, and subtle tool marks consistent with manual woodworking rather than modern machine production.

Pairing a dark wood antique with minimalist modern seating or placing it against a neutral wall creates a balanced contrast that highlights the craftsmanship without overwhelming the space.

Maintain the wood by applying natural beeswax polish periodically, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and keeping the item away from direct heat sources to prevent timber cracking.
