FAQs

Marine telescopes, commonly known as spyglasses, were essential navigational instruments used by naval officers and merchant mariners during the 18th and 19th centuries to spot land, ships, and navigational hazards at sea.

Authentic period marine telescopes typically combine polished brass for the draw tubes and fittings to resist corrosion in marine environments, with wooden barrels, often mahogany, wrapped around the main body for a secure grip.

Authentic pieces usually feature hand-turned wooden components, multi-draw brass tubes with threaded joints, maker signatures engraved near the eyepiece, and natural patina or wear consistent with age and maritime use.

This instrument can be displayed horizontally on a bookshelf or mounted on a desk stand to add a sense of maritime heritage, intellectual curiosity, and polished metallic contrast to a study or living space.

Maintain the item by dusting the wood with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding abrasive metal cleaners on the brass to preserve the natural historical patina. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and high humidity.
