This is a Victorian burr walnut Sutherland table in the English country house style. The piece is constructed from walnut, burr walnut and brass, displaying a warm brown colour with rich caramel hues across its figured timber top. The oval drop-leaf top features scalloped edge details at the corners, book-matched veneer, and rests on articulated gate-legs, elegantly turned baluster supports, and a central stretcher rail. Prominent cabriole feet display blind fretwork carving and scrolled toes, while the whole structure moves on six original brass castors. The table measures 73.5 cm high, 92 cm wide and 39 cm deep when folded. In a home today, this occasional table serves a versatile role in smaller rooms or living spaces. When folded, its narrow profile allows for convenient placement at the end of a sofa or against a wall. The wide drop leaves extend to comfortably seat four people for tea service or breakfast when needed. Solid construction and compact proportions make it practical for everyday use in a reception room, sitting room or study, combining traditional period craftsmanship with functional flexibility.

FAQs

A Sutherland table is a mid-nineteenth-century English drop-leaf table characterised by a narrow central top section and deep falling leaves. Designed for versatility, the leaves are supported by pivoted legs or gates that swing out when extended.

Victorian Sutherland tables were commonly crafted from high-grade woods such as walnut, mahogany, and rosewood, often featuring figured burr veneers, turned spindle supports, carved trestle bases, and original brass castors.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples feature original construction details such as hand-cut joinery, burr walnut veneer patterns, turned gate leg mechanisms, hand-carved feet, and period-correct brass cup castors.

A Sutherland table functions effectively as a slim console table when folded flat against a wall or behind a sofa. When unfolded, it serves as a tea table or compact four-seat dining surface within smaller living areas.

Preserve burr walnut surfaces by placing the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Clean using a soft dry cloth and apply natural beeswax sparingly along the wood grain to maintain the patinated surface.
