Jacobean and early 18th-century furniture is characterised by solid timber construction, heavy proportions, and geometric or chip-carved ornamentation, reflecting the transitional craftsmanship of the period before the lighter mahogany styles emerged.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from native English oak, often joined using traditional mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs, hand-carved drawer linings, and turned legs without the use of modern metal fasteners.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural timber oxidisation, hand-planed surfaces, irregular tool marks, hand-cut dovetails within drawers, and shrinkage cracks consistent with age and centuries of atmospheric exposure.

Pairing a dark, heavily textured antique timber table with minimalist modern seating, contemporary ceramics, or neutral backdrops creates a balanced interior scheme that highlights the historical craftsmanship.

Maintain antique oak by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber splitting, applying microcrystalline wax periodically, and dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth.
