This pair of seated lion post finials belongs to the traditional architectural style dating from 1950. Fashioned from reconstituted stone with a weathered grey colour, the pieces depict heraldic lions holding shields, complete with carved manes, integral square plinths, and visible surface weathering and moss growth on the stone. The items measure 43 cm in height, 18 cm in width, and 23 cm in depth. Suitable for placement as architectural features in gardens or grounds, the sculptures provide a traditional English country house aesthetic. Positioning them on gate piers, porch walls, or terrace pillars creates a classic focal point at entrances or boundaries.

Stone lion finials are architectural toppers designed to cap entrance piers, gate posts, or balustrades. Historically, lions represented heraldic power and guardianship, serving as visual anchors at the entryways of country estates and formal gardens.

Traditional gate finials are carved from natural limestone, sandstone, or Portland stone, or cast using reconstituted stone and concrete mixtures. Cast and reconstituted stone allowed detailed repetition of complex heraldic shapes while offering durability against weather elements.

Authentic aged stone exhibits natural surface erosion, lichens, moss accumulation, and micro-cracking caused by freeze-thaw cycles over time. Older cast stone pieces often display subtle variations in aggregate, seam lines from historical multi-piece moulds, and patination that cannot be artificially replicated.

These finials are positioned atop brick or stone gate piers flanking driveways, mounted on low garden walls, or placed on pedestals framing formal garden pathways and step landings.

Maintain stone finials by avoiding harsh chemical cleaners and high-pressure washers, which strip away protective patination. Brush away loose dirt gently with water and a soft bristle brush, and inspect periodically for structural cracks that could expand during winter frost.
