This blacksmith-made coal wagon from the 20th century functions as a practical fireside accessory in an industrial utilitarian style. The piece is constructed from heavy wrought and cast iron with a dark grey finish, featuring a tapered hopper body, a rolled rim with a faded gold-coloured edge, a side handle, and four hand-forged spoked wheels. Measuring 44 cm high, 49 cm wide, and 40 cm deep, the sturdy coal scuttle is compact enough to sit neatly beside a fireplace hearth. Designed for everyday utility, the wheeled container transports fuel easily across the floor while maintaining a traditional industrial loft aesthetic. The heavy metal construction and rolling mechanism provide both durability and convenience for hearthside storage. Placed beside an active fireplace or woodburning stove, the miniature wagon accommodates coal or logs while adding a functional utilitarian accent to the living space.

During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, coal scuttles were essential hearth accessories crafted by local blacksmiths to transport and store solid fuel near domestic stoves and fireplaces.

Traditional coal scuttles and wagons were primarily forged from heavy-gauge sheet iron, wrought iron, or cast iron to withstand high temperatures and daily wear.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand-riveted joints, hand-forged spoked wheels, irregular hand-bent metal edges, and natural patination or oxidisation on the metal surfaces.

A metal coal wagon functions well beside a contemporary log burner or open hearth as a container for fire wood, kindling, or rolled newspapers.

Maintain ironwork by keeping it dry, dusting it regularly with a soft cloth, and applying a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax or black grate polish to prevent rust formation.
