Staffordshire figures refer to pottery and porcelain figurines produced in the pottery district of Staffordshire, England, particularly during the 19th century. They were designed primarily as affordable mantelpiece decorations for the expanding middle class, depicting royal figures, literary characters, animals, and contemporary events.

These pieces were typically slip-cast or press-moulded from earthenware clay, then hand-painted with underglaze colours and metallic highlights before being fired in a kiln. Many are characterised by a hollow back, often referred to as flatbacks, as they were intended to be viewed from the front on a mantel.

Authentic period pieces generally feature fine crazing in the glaze, vent holes on the underside or back to prevent bursting during firing, and hand-painted details with a soft, worn patina. Makers marks are relatively rare on these domestic ornaments, so identification relies heavily on weight, clay body, painting style, and the characteristic casting seams.

These decorative objects work effectively when displayed on a mantelpiece, within a bookshelf, or grouped on a console table to introduce historical character and colour to a room. Pairing them with contemporary furnishings creates a collected, eclectic aesthetic that highlights their traditional craftsmanship.

Antique ceramics should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent fading of the hand-painted glazes. Dust them gently with a dry, soft brush, and avoid using water or chemical cleaning agents on pieces with surface crazing, as moisture can seep into the porous earthenware body.
