Description

A rare find from the mid 19thc is this beautifully turned cherrywood cooking instrument, known as a Spurtle....it was used for stirring porridge, soups and broths...... the rod like shape meant that the porridge can be stirred without forming lumps or congealing, unlike a spoon which has a "dragging" effect during stirring, ....the low surface area also meant that the porridge had less chance of sticking.....it is in very good condition with an excellent colour and patina.

Scottish. C1840-60.

A spurtle is a traditional Scottish wooden kitchen tool, dating back to the 15th century, specifically designed for stirring porridge, soups, and stews without clumping.

Antiques spurtles were typically crafted from dense local hardwoods like fruitwood, sycamore, or boxwood, shaped using a manual lathe to produce smooth, rounded handles and tapered shafts.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural patina, tool marks consistent with hand-turning on a pole lathe, and dry, dense wood with signs of historic wear from use.

These historical objects can be displayed in rustic pottery crocks or mounted in shadow boxes, adding textural warmth and authentic heritage to kitchen or dining spaces.

Antique treen should be kept away from direct heat sources and moisture, requiring occasional application of food-safe mineral oil or beeswax to prevent the wood from drying out or splitting.
