Staffordshire pottery spaniels were produced extensively in the county of Staffordshire, England, during the 19th century, often manufactured as symmetrical pairs to sit on either side of a fireplace mantel.

These figures were traditionally slip-cast or hand-moulded in earthenware, then hand-painted under or over the glaze, frequently featuring lustre details such as gilt collars and chains.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit crazing in the glaze, vent holes on the underside or back, hand-painted facial features with minor asymmetries, and wear consistent with age rather than uniform modern casting.

They can be displayed traditionally on a mantelpiece or styled on bookshelves and sideboards to introduce a touch of historic character and classic symmetry to modern rooms.

Keep them out of direct sunlight to prevent paint fading, dust gently with a soft dry cloth, and avoid using liquid cleaners or soaking them to protect the fragile glaze and historic finish.
