FAQs

A lowboy is a small occasional table featuring one or more drawers, originating in the late 17th century and remaining popular throughout the Georgian era. It was traditionally used as a dressing table, a side table for holding utensils or writing materials, or as a small serving table.

Authentic Georgian lowboys were predominantly constructed from native timbers such as oak, walnut, or mahogany. Construction features typically include hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, pegged mortise and tenon joints, and brass drop-handle hardware.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the timber for period-appropriate patina, hand-sawn markings, and traditional joint construction. Original hardware, secondary woods used in drawer linings, and natural wear consistent with age also help verify authenticity.

A Georgian lowboy functions effectively as a hall table, an accent piece in a living room, or a compact desk. Its classic lines and warm wooden tones complement both traditional interiors and contemporary settings by adding historical character and textural contrast.

Antique oak furniture should be kept out of direct sunlight and away from direct heat sources to prevent wood cracking and fading. Regular dusting with a dry lint-free cloth and occasional application of traditional beeswax help maintain the finish and protect the timber.
