Description

Thoughtful design, well executed

The numbers at the back probably relate to the client for whom the table was commissioned. The numerals and layout are typical of Wylie and Lochhead, but it's interesting that only the name of the city is included. The other Glasgow firm making furniture of this quality at the time and who were generally more alligned to its style, is Cottier & Co.

Victorian side tables often feature robust construction, dark timber such as oak or walnut, and decorative elements inspired by historic revival movements, reflecting the craftsmanship of the 19th century.

Cabinetmakers during the 19th century predominantly used native and imported hardwoods, with solid oak, mahogany, and walnut being standard for structural integrity and fine surface detailing.

Authentication involves examining construction methods such as hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional timber shrinkage, oxidation patterns in the wood, and historical tool marks consistent with period manufacturing.

Pairing a historical wooden table with contemporary minimalist seating or placing it against a neutral wall creates a balanced contrast that highlights the natural grain and craftsmanship of the period piece.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent timber fading, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the wooden surface.
