This 19th-century Regency writing table is rendered in a warm brown mahogany with a restored polished finish and a fine natural timber grain. The rectangular top sits above a single frieze drawer fitted with twin turned wooden knob handles, supported by slender ring-turned tapering legs that terminate in small brass wheel castors. Minor historic knocks, marks, and subtle age-related repairs mark the surfaces, while the joints remain solid and the drawer operates smoothly. Measuring 51 cm wide by 43 cm deep and 73 cm high with a 61 cm knee clearance, the compact proportions suit placement as a writing desk, side table, or accent piece in a study, hallway, or living room.

During the 19th century, writing tables became central fixtures in private libraries, drawing rooms, and studies across Britain. Designed specifically for personal correspondence, these pieces evolved from earlier library tables into more compact, portable forms with integrated drawers for pens and paper.

Craftsmen primarily utilized solid mahogany and mahogany veneers due to the woods fine grain, stability, and deep warm tone. Construction typically featured hand-dovetailed drawer joints, turned hardwood legs, and solid brass castors for mobility.

Authentic pieces generally show hand-cut dovetail joints inside the drawers, original brass castors with natural tarnish, and uneven shrinkage in solid wood drawer bottoms. Signs of age-related wear around the drawer pulls and natural timber oxidation also indicate genuine period construction.

A small writing table can serve as an elegant hallway console, a compact home office desk, or an occasional side table behind a sofa. Pairing timber tones with modern lighting or contemporary artwork creates an engaging contrast between period craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, following the direction of the wood grain. Protect the timber surface from direct sunlight and heat sources, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the original finish and patina.
