Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Hand-cut dovetails with narrow pins on the drawer front: cabinet work before machine cutting.
Quarter-sawn oak drawer linings with visible flecks: high-grade 18th-century British secondary timber.
Brushing slide below the top moulding: dressing chest design widely used in the 1700s.
Shaped bracket feet on the base: supporting structure common to kneehole desks of this time.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Georgian kneehole desk uses Cuban mahogany with a dark brown timber finish and brass hardware. The structure comprises a long top drawer above six smaller pedestal drawers, flanking a central recessed arched cupboard door. Additional visible details include batwing-style escutcheons, swan-neck handles, a small ink stain on the top, and bracket feet. The dimensions measure 78 cm high, 75 cm wide, and 45 cm deep. Such a piece suits a study or home library as a functional writing table or small workspace. The pedestals provide ample storage compartments for stationery and desk accessories, while the central kneehole cupboard offers additional enclosed space for paperwork. Traditional period proportions allow placement against a wall or within a corner arrangement in a domestic interior.

FAQs

A Georgian kneehole desk is a compact 18th-century writing table characterised by a flat top surface, a long upper drawer, twin pedestals containing stacked drawers, and a recessed central cupboard within the kneehole space.

These desks were constructed using dense hardwoods such as Cuban or Honduras mahogany, frequently utilizing oak or pine as secondary drawer-lining timbers, and fitted with cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Authentic Georgian examples feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original brass hardware with interior nut fixings, bracket feet, and genuine age-related wear or natural oxidisation on timber surfaces.

This versatile piece functions as a compact study desk, hallway console, or vanity table, pairing well alongside minimalist contemporary art, neutral wall tones, and modern task lighting.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish twice yearly to preserve the natural grain finish, avoiding direct sunlight, radiators, or harsh chemical sprays.
