How do I clean a tarnished brass gong?

Dust it with a soft cloth. Leave the heavy tarnish alone. Polishing strips away the historic patina and exposes fresh metal to the air. Harsh chemical cleaners often lodge in the fine hammer marks. They'll leave a white residue that ruins the look of the instrument.

I recently inherited a wooden standing gong from my grandfather, but the padded mallet seems to have gone missing over the years, so what should I look for as a replacement?

You'll need a beater scaled to the size of the disc. A massive heavy mallet will over-drive a small piece, while a light stick won't wake up a large one. Look for turned wooden handles with a firm core wrapped in felt, leather or wool. The padding softens the attack and draws out a deeper tone. Avoid hard drumsticks, as they'll leave dents and produce a harsh metallic clatter.

What type of cord hangs the disc?

Most traditional setups use a strong natural fibre. Thick hemp rope or twisted animal gut handles the weight well while absorbing some of the shock from the strike. Modern nylon rope looks wrong and slips through the suspension holes too easily. If you've got to replace a broken hanging line, source a length of plain leather bootlace or braided cotton cord.

There are two holes drilled near the top edge of the metal disc on my dining room gong, but they look quite uneven and rough, is this normal for these pieces?

Uneven suspension holes show up frequently on hand-beaten Asian examples. The makers punched or drilled them quickly with basic hand tools once the main shaping was finished. English factory pieces usually feature clean, circular holes drilled by machine. The rougher holes on a hand-worked bronze disc are a standard part of its construction and rarely cause any structural issues unless the metal has worn paper-thin at the edge.
