Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating predominantly in Brienz, Switzerland, during the 19th century, Black Forest carvings became synonymous with highly detailed woodcraft depicting wildlife and whimsical animal figures. Novelty table gongs were produced throughout the late Victorian era as functional decorative pieces used to signal mealtimes in grand households.

The structural bases were hand-carved from native European hardwoods, most commonly linden wood or walnut, valued for their fine grain. The suspended acoustic gong discs were crafted from brass, bronze, or nickel-plated metal to generate a resonant chime when struck with a leather or textile-padded wooden mallet.

Authentic pieces feature crisp, hand-chiselled tool marks rather than modern machine moulding, along with genuine age-related patination in recessed areas. Original items typically display dark, rich stain tones over fine grain and may retain functional metal hardware or custom-fitted wooden strikers.

Table gongs serve as distinct decorative conversation pieces when positioned on a sideboard, console table, or bookshelf. Pairing dark carved timber with polished metal accents complements transitional, eclectic, or traditional interiors.

Dust the carved wood regularly using a soft, dry bristle brush to reach detailed recesses without abrading the finish. Preserve timber moisture with a high-quality microcrystalline wax, and gently polish the metal disc with a dry microfiber cloth, avoiding abrasive liquid cleaners on historic finishes.
