Can you play with antique sets?

Most wooden sets from the nineteenth century are robust enough for regular use. Keep them away from radiators and direct sunlight to stop the timber drying out. Take care with the more delicate bone or ivory sets. The threaded joints can become brittle over time and heavy handling might snap the internal pins.

My grandad left me a boxed set where the white pieces are normal wood but the black ones seem heavy, why is that?

The darker pieces are likely made from solid ebony. It is a dense tropical hardwood that naturally sinks in water, making it noticeably heavier than the boxwood used for the white side. Sometimes makers added extra weight by drilling out the bases and pouring in molten lead. If the white pieces feel light, they might be unweighted boxwood, while the black ebony pieces carry their own natural mass.

How do you clean dirty pieces?

Use a soft dry cloth to remove surface dust. If dirt is built up in the carved crevices of the knights, a soft bristled brush works well. Never use liquid cleaners or water. Moisture swells the wood fibres, lifting the grain and potentially ungluing the baize pads on the bases.

I have noticed that older wooden knights have different faces even within the same box, did they mix up pieces from different batches?

They were carved by hand rather than turned on a lathe. Even a master carver repeating the same pattern will introduce slight variations in the angle of the ears or the depth of the eyes. It is normal to see differences between the four knights in a single original set.
