Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Designed by Nathaniel Cooke and endorsed by chess master Howard Staunton in 1849, the Staunton pattern became the standardised design for competitive and leisure chess sets globally due to its clear, distinguishable piece shapes.

Authentic 19th-century sets were typically crafted from dense boxwood for the light pieces and natural ebony for the black pieces, often weighted with lead bases covered in green felt for added stability during play.

Look for distinct design features such as hand-carved knight heads with detailed manes, stamped maker marks or crowns on the rooks and knights, weighted lead bases with original felt, and natural age patina on the boxwood pieces.

Display the set arranged on a coffee table, library desk, or open shelving alongside leather-bound books to add texture and historical interest to a living space or study.

Keep the pieces away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent warping or cracking; gently clean them with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a light coat of natural beeswax polish periodically to maintain the wood finish.
