Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Staunton pattern was standardized in 1849 by Nathaniel Cooke and endorsed by chess master Howard Staunton. It established uniform, easily recognizable shapes for each piece, including the knight modeled after the Elgin Marbles, becoming the global standard for chess play.

Late Victorian chess sets were predominantly turned and carved from boxwood, with the dark side either naturally ebonised or crafted from solid ebony wood. Bases were frequently weighted with lead and lined with green wool baize to prevent scratching gaming boards.

Authentic sets display specific hand-carved detail, particularly in the expression and mane carving of the knights. Pieces often feature stamped crowns on the rooks and knights for the kings side, consistent weighting, and original green felt or baize applied to the bases.

An antique chess set functions well as a tactile decorative object placed on a coffee table, study desk, or side table. Displaying the pieces partially arranged or housed alongside its open wooden box adds texture and historical balance to contemporary furniture.

Keep wooden pieces away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage or cracking of the boxwood. Dust regularly using a soft brush and clean gently with microcrystalline wax to protect the natural patina and timber finish.
