Stoneware is clay fired hot enough to vitrify, giving a hard, non-porous body used for storage, drink and the table long before Victorian potteries turned it to decorative ends.
The oldest stoneware on Sellingantiques runs well before the 19th century - 17th-century Rhenish bellarmines and wine jars, and a Ming dynasty Longquan celadon censer.
