Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1880s:
Moulded neoclassical urns and husk swags: revival taste of the late nineteenth century.
Square tapering legs with fluted details: cabinet making from the late Victorian period.
Timber movement in the curved frieze: natural settling of seasoned wood over time.
Acanthus leaf carvings at the leg tops: classical detailing popular in the 1880s.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This late 19th-century Louis XVI Revival centre table takes the form of an oval wooden piece with a distressed grey painted finish, measuring 77 cm high, 135 cm wide, and 87 cm deep. The apron displays low relief carved urns and swag garlands interspersed with oval medallions, positioned beneath an ovolo-moulded edge around the top. Four tapering and reeded legs support the frame, finished with square feet at the base and detailed with leaf carving at the shoulders. A mottled grey and white glaze covers the surface, showing aged wear and crackling across the top and frame. Placed in a living room, hallway or study, this table provides a practical surface for display lamps, books, or decorative objects. The compact proportions allow placement against walls or as a freestanding centrepiece in traditional and eclectic interiors.

FAQs

Tables from this period typically feature symmetrical proportioning inspired by Greco-Roman design, incorporating motifs such as carved urns, draped swags, husks, and fluted tapered legs.

Frames were typically constructed from carved hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or beech, often finished with distressed paint, gilded accents, or faux marble tops.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural paint wear around high-touch areas, traditional joinery methods, and age-consistent surface cracking or patination across the finish.

Positioned in a spacious foyer or hallway, the table acts as a focal anchor when paired with contemporary sculptural ceramics or minimalist lighting.

Clean surfaces regularly using a soft, dry lint-free cloth, avoiding abrasive chemicals or excessive moisture that may lift the painted finish.
