For sale, a large Chinese Famille Rose Armorial rectangular dish, Qianlong period, circa 1765. The coat of arms are for Nicholas of Gloucester, Devon and Somerset, and Winterborne Earls in Wiltshire. Refer page 520 Chinese Armorial Porcelain by D S Howard. The dish is in excellent undamaged condition, without hairlines, chips, or restoration. There is just a little glaze wear due to stacking. No loss to enamels and with a fine central Armorial Coat of Arms. Size 32.7cm long by 24.5cm wide and approx. 3.5cm deep. A rare dish in excellent condition. FAQs

Armorial porcelain refers to Chinese export ceramics custom-commissioned by European families, bearing their heraldic coat of arms. Popular during the 17th and 18th centuries, these pieces were manufactured in China and painted with heraldic crests sent by Western clients.

These pieces were formed from refined kaolin clay and petuntse in Jingdezhen before being high-fired. The polychrome famille rose enamels and gilding were subsequently applied and fired at lower temperatures in enamelling workshops, often located in Canton.

Authentic Qianlong period porcelain typically features hand-applied opaque pink enamels containing gold precipitates, slight surface irregular glaze textures known as orange-peel, and period-typical firing iron spots or foot rim characteristics.

Display the dish vertically on a plate stand atop a console table or sideboard, or arrange it within a lighted display cabinet among contemporary ceramics to create a curated, eclectic aesthetic.

Clean overglaze enamelled porcelain gently using warm water and mild detergent with a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners, abrasive pads, and dishwashers, as these will wear down fragile gilded and enamelled surfaces.
