This Chippendale style occasional table from 1880 adopts the classic English country house aesthetic. Constructed from mahogany, the timber displays a rich warm mahogany colour with a polished finish reflecting the overhead light. The circular top features a carved scalloped piecrust edge with distinct mouldings following the undulating perimeter. Below the top rests a turned central pedestal above carved cabriole legs. The table stands 69 cm high, 69 cm wide, and 69 cm deep. Positioned at the end of a sofa, this versatile piece serves well for holding lamps, drinks, or decorative items, whilst the tilt top mechanism allows the surface to fold vertically when floor space is required.

Originating in 18th-century Britain, these tables feature a scalloped, raised moulded rim resembling a pie crust, combined with a tilting tabletop mounted on a central pedestal with tripod legs.

They were predominantly crafted from dense mahogany, utilising brass latch mechanisms, hand-turned pedestals, and carved cabriole legs with pad or claw-and-ball feet.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut dovetails on the tilt catch block, slight timber shrinkage along the grain on the underside of the top, and hand-carved detailing along the moulded rim.

Place the table beside an armchair as an occasional drink stand, or display it with the top tilted vertically against a wall to showcase the wood grain and carved border.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish annually to preserve the timber finish, keeping the table away from direct radiators and moist environments.
