Chippendale Style Mahogany Super Table

18th century
For Sale by Carse Antiques
Description

18th century and later Chippendale design George 3rd carved mahogany supper table. The carved mahogany base is all original with turned column. The top is also original to the base but has been shaped and carved at the end of the 19th century in my opinion. The table is tilt top with a period but not originl brass catch, the original catch was slight larger as you can see the shadow. The table is a nice colour with waxed finish. Fabulous design top and crafted to the highest of quality, the carving is really crisp with great detail.

So basically this is a period 18th century tilt top table that has had the top shaped and carved at the end of the 19th century.

SIZE; 30" diameter top. 29 1/2" high

CIRCA; 1770 and later

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Chippendale style supper table features a circular tilt-top surface carved with dished compartments around a central recess, designed to hold plates and dishes securely. The top rests on a turned pedestal supported by a tripod base with carved cabriole legs.

These tables are constructed from solid mahogany, favoured for its tight grain and carving characteristics. Construction involves hand-carved dished wells, a wooden or iron tilt-latch mechanism, and jointed tripod legs attached to a turned central column.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved decoration with subtle variations, original tilt-catch hardware, and uniform patination on the underside of the timber. Hand-planed tool marks on the bottom surface indicate pre-industrial craftsmanship.

Place the table alongside tailored armchairs as an occasional beverage table, or position it tilted upright near a wall to display the carved top design as an accent element. The warm mahogany tones integrate well with neutral textiles and modern art.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish periodically to protect the timber finish. Position the furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage or cracking of the solid wood.
