Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in 18th-century Britain during the reign of King George III, a butlers tray was designed to transport items from service areas to reception rooms. Featuring raised sides with integral handles and often fitted with hinged drop flaps, these trays rested on portable or fixed timber stands during service.

Georgian butler trays were primarily crafted from dense West Indian or Cuban mahogany timber, selected for its stability and grain. Construction techniques included hand-cut dovetail joints, solid brass flush strap hinges secured with countersunk screws, and hand-shaped gallery handles.

Authentic period pieces display hand-carved joinery, original brass strap hinges showing natural oxidisation, and hand-cut handle openings with smooth, aged contours. Undersides often show unrefined saw marks and uniform timber shrinkage along the grain consistent with 18th-century timber preparation.

A butlers tray table functions effectively as an occasional coffee table, drinks bar, or side table in contemporary interiors. Positioning the piece alongside seating allows the flat surface to hold books, glassware, or decorative ceramics.

Maintain mahogany timber by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying clear beeswax sparingly along the grain twice yearly. Prevent surface damage by utilising coasters under liquids and positioning the timber away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators.
