We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Staffordshire flatback figures are lead-glazed earthenware ornaments produced in Staffordshire, England, predominantly during the 19th century. Designed with unmodeled flat posteriors to sit flush against walls or fireplace surrounds, they often depicted figures from folk culture, royalty, and daily life.

These figures were created using press moulds filled with earthenware clay, fired in kilns, and subsequently hand-decorated with overglaze enamel paint and gilt details. The hollow design and flat back allowed for efficient production and reduced kiln space usage during manufacture.

Authentic Victorian examples typically show visible press-mould seams, simple unglazed bases, age-appropriate glaze crazing, and lightweight ceramic construction. They generally lack maker marks, featuring distinct hand-applied decoration and minor hand-modelling variations.

Place figures symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard top, or within an open bookcase layout to anchor a room vignette. The classic white ground and accent glazes complement both traditional interiors and modern minimalist displays.

Clean the surfaces by dusting lightly with a soft microfibre cloth or clean, dry artist brush to protect the original overglaze enamel. Avoid immersing porous ceramics in water or using harsh chemical solvents, which can damage original paintwork and gilding.
