Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This unusual barware object from the 1900 period combines a warm brown oak barrel with four brass binding hoops, a turned brass tap, and a carved grape stopper. The barrel rests on an intricately carved Black Forest shaped stand decorated with grapevine motifs and united by a turned stretcher. The timber shows natural golden-brown grain variations, the brass hardware displays a polished metallic finish, and the hardwood stand features deep relief carvings of leaves and fruit terminating in curved feet. Measuring 50 cm high, 38.5 cm wide, and 37 cm deep, the piece sits neatly on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library or dining room setting as a decorative display item or functional period container.

FAQs

Black Forest carved woodenware originated in Switzerland during the 19th century, renowned for intricate naturalistic carvings depicting flora, fauna, and foliage to support domestic table items such as barrels, clocks, and decanters.

These items typically feature oak staves bound with brass or iron hoops, paired with hand-carved hardwood stands made from lime, walnut, or oak to ensure structural integrity and support.

Authentic pieces display hand-carved tool marks, detailed naturalistic motifs such as grapevines or woodland wildlife, age-appropriate patination on metal hoops, and functional brass taps.

Positioned on a sideboard, home bar cart, or desk, an antique cask serves as a functional or decorative focal point that adds organic texture, warm wood tones, and historical character.

Dust the carved details regularly with a soft brush, treat the timber with natural beeswax polish, and keep the object away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement or splitting.
