This Victorian gentleman's library inkstand dates from 1890 and is executed in warm brown English oak, solid brass, heavy clear glass, and a silver-plated horseshoe frame and pen rest. The design centers on a cube-shaped glass inkwell topped by a hinged brass jockey cap lid with a curved silver-plated peak. The solid oak base takes a horseshoe silhouette with a raised gallery securing the inkwell, accompanied by metal supports forming a front pen rest holding a dark dip pen adorned with gold decoration. Practical dimensions measure 14.6 cm high by 13.3 cm wide and 16.5 cm deep. Today, this piece serves as a functional and decorative desk accessory for an office desk or study table, combining equestrian motifs with Victorian craftsmanship. The inkwell design allows versatile placement so the dip pen rests conveniently at the front or back of the base. Minor age-appropriate wear appears on the edge of the cap peak and metal surfaces, highlighting the authentic character of the antique desk piece.

Popularised during the late 19th century, novelty inkstands combined functional desk equipment with sculptural motifs, frequently incorporating equestrian, sporting, or naturalistic themes.

These desk accessories were commonly crafted using solid brass, nickel or silver plate, heavy moulded or cut glass reservoirs, and turned hardwood bases such as oak or mahogany.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-assembled metal fittings, natural wear or oxidisation in unpolished crevices, heavy lead glass containers, and occasionally stamped British registration marks or maker marks.

Place the piece on an executive desk, console table, or library shelf as a textural narrative accent alongside stacked books and brass desk accoutrements.

Wipe metal and glass surfaces with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoid harsh chemical polishes on aged patinas, and clean dried ink from glass containers using warm water.
