This book, edited by Augustine Birrell, contains 2 volumes in one and whilst it is only some 3.7cms wide it is printed on extremely thin paper running to a total of some 1534 pages. The first edition was published in 1896 and this 1919 edition is the 18th reprint. Extremely well bound by the highly regarded Riviere bindery in blue half crushed Morocco over cloth boards with finely gilded paneled compartments and a title compartment formed by 5 prominently raised bands. The end papers are marbled, all page edges gilt and it carries a beautifully executed hand drawn illuminated presentation citation, dated December 1926, to the front free end papers, to Mr H E Hurrell choirmaster for 40 years to the Congregational Church choir of King Street, Great Yarmouth.

Internally clean, bright and tightly bound. Some foxing to the first and last few pages as well as to some pages around the two portrait frontispieces. Rippling to pages but no affect to text. Gilding very bright and fresh to spine and covers but somewhat rubbed to page edges. Cloth to boards lightly rubbed and marked in places.
The book is 20.2cms high, 15cms deep 3.7cms wide and has an unpackaged weight of 0.88 kgs.
