This Regency carved wood and polychromed figure depicts a flower seller standing upon a rectangular plinth. The figurine displays European folk art style with a rustic farmhouse design vibe. The polychrome finish includes warm brown tones, black garments, yellow trousers, and reddish wraps on the lower legs, complemented by a brimmed hat and an articulated arm. Hand-carved drapery accentuates the clothing while a woven basket contains detailed flowers. Surface wear reveals the aged paint finish over the wooden body. Measuring 23 cm high, 10 cm wide, and 6 cm deep, the sculpture is suited for display on a bookshelf. Placed among books or decorative items in a study or living area, the figure brings historic character and traditional craftsmanship into an interior setting.

Polychrome wood sculptures are carved timber figures painted with multiple colours to enhance detail and realism. Historically produced across Europe for religious and secular displays, these carvings captured regional occupations, characters, and trade subjects.

Craftsmen carved these figures from native hardwoods such as lime, walnut, or pine using chisels and gouges. A layer of gesso was frequently applied over the timber prior to painting with mineral-based tempera or oil pigments.

Authentic period examples exhibit natural shrinkage cracks along the grain, honest surface wear where hands interacted with the figure, and layered paint loss showing underlying gesso or bare timber.

Displaying a solitary folk carving on a minimalist open shelf, mantelpiece, or within a glass vitrine creates an engaging focal point that contrasts with modern architectural lines.

Keep carved timber items away from direct sunlight, central heating sources, and fluctuating humidity to prevent wood splitting. Lightly dust with a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water or chemical polishes that strip original painted finishes.
