Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This late 19th-century French country pétanque set consists of eight large spherical wooden boules and one smaller jack ball, designed for the traditional outdoor game. Each dark brown piece displays an all-over hand-studded nail pattern creating a textured exterior, complemented by inlaid brass roundels on the surface of the eight larger spheres. The collection exhibits visible wear and age consistent with traditional use, including varied patination and minor surface marks across the wooden and metal elements. Measuring 10 cm in diameter for the main balls, the set sits well as a decorative display on a sideboard top in a living space or hallway, adding rustic farmhouse character to an interior.

FAQs

Boules cloutees are 19th and early 20th-century French bowling balls constructed by hand-driving hundreds of metal nails or studs into a boxwood core. They represent the historic predecessors to modern all-metal petanque and bocce balls.

Traditional sets were crafted from dense hardwood cores, typically root boxwood, completely clad in overlapping steel, iron, or brass nails. Inlaid brass plates or initialled studs were often added to identify ownership or mark teams during play.

Authentic period pieces exhibit irregular, hand-hammered nail heads, natural wear or shrinkage in the wooden core, and a deep aged patina on the metal studs. Later reproductions often feature uniform machine-made nails or modern cast construction.

These textured spherical objects are commonly styled by grouping them together in wooden bowls, marble trays, or open shelving units. Their heavy weight and metallic patina provide tactile sculptural interest on sideboards and coffee tables.

Keep the set in a dry interior environment with stable humidity to prevent the internal wood core from expanding or cracking. Apply a light coat of microcrystalline wax or mineral oil to the metal studs to inhibit surface rust and oxidisation.
