Description

An excellent example of an early Staffordshire figure....the "shepherd boy" carrying a lost or injured lamb....he is standing on a raised rocky plinth and in front of a tree which is in full leaf....what is nice about this figure, is that it is in original condition with no restoration and the colours are still vibrant....it is of the quality of Enoch Wood or his cousin Ralph Wood, who had potteries at Burslem in Staffordshire, but this figure is not stamped...

English. C1800-20.

Staffordshire pottery encompasses figures and tableware manufactured in the Staffordshire region of England, with a notable surge in hand-painted earthenware figures occurring during the late 18th and 19th centuries.

These figures were typically modelled in earthenware clay, hand-painted with metallic oxide glazes, and fired in pottery kilns, often featuring distinctive bocage or tree-stump supports.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit signs of age such as crazing in the glaze, hollow undersides with vent holes, hand-modelled details rather than cast uniformity, and appropriate wear to the pigments.

Display these figures on bookshelves, mantelpieces, or enclosed cabinets to add historical depth, texture, and a focal point of traditional craftsmanship to modern spaces.

Clean antique ceramics gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush to remove dust, avoiding water or chemical cleaners that might damage delicate hand-painted glazes or historical repairs.
