This Victorian wall map depicts the Russian Dominions in Europe, produced by Jas Wyld in London around 1850 to 1860. The piece comprises an engraved paper map featuring detailed copperplate typography, an engraved cartouche, and hand-coloured regional boundary lines in shades of blue, yellow, and red against a cream background. It is housed in a simple rectangular wooden frame with a slim brown moulding, fronted by glass that shows subtle reflections from the surrounding environment. The visible fold lines indicate its past as a folded map before mounting. Measuring 117 cm high, 102 cm wide, and 1 cm deep, the map is designed for wall display. Suitable for a gentleman's library or study, the map hangs effectively above a sideboard or desk to introduce historic geographical interest to an interior scheme. Its large rectangular format provides a strong focal point on a wall, while the subdued cream and earth tones complement traditional period decor. The piece brings authentic mid-19th-century cartography into domestic spaces, offering a clear view of historical European borders as recorded by contemporary geographers.

James Wyld was a prominent British cartographer and official geographer to Queen Victoria, renowned for producing detailed and accurate political and geographical charts throughout the 19th century.

Maps from this period were typically printed via copperplate engraving onto rag paper, often finished with hand-applied watercolour outlines and mounted on linen for structural reinforcement.

Authentic period maps exhibit engraved plate impression marks along the margins, age-appropriate paper tone, hand-coloured boundary lines, and detailed engraver or publisher imprints.

A large framed map serves as a focal point when hung above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or writing desk, complementing classic, industrial, or modern study schemes.

To prevent fading and paper degradation, display the framed work away from direct sunlight using UV-protective glazing and maintain stable humidity levels within the room.
