Copeland Spode Italian Service in Superb Condition. Circa 1900

Description

This superb copeland spode 'italian' service is in excellent condition having only ever been used as a dresser display set. The collection was built over many years and contains many items no longer available in the spode range although it is still possible to add to the service from spodes excellent current catalogue. The general date is based around 1900 but there are earlier and some later examples within. This is my personal collection of many decades of ownership.

The dressing table set is probably unique now. I bought this privately over thirty years ago and it was still in the wooden delivery crate packed with straw and wood waste. The set consists of wash bowl, jug, vase, soap dish and strainer, candle stick etc, (small chip to rim of candle seat). Victorian in origin.

Other unusual and highly collectable facets are the tea pots and coffee pots. Beautiful tureens with covers, graduated meat dishes etc, etc.

There are 82 component pieces altogether. I have carefully inspected the service and can find the following, small chip to candle stick rim, small chips to one cream jug and a chip to the brush holder, apart from these mentioned details the service is tip top and can be used or displayed as required.

Ceramics are not my field but I welcome all and any questions from interested clients and will endeavour to supply accurate answers and further images if required, please do not hesitate to contact me.

FAQs

Introduced around 1816, the Spode Italian pattern features a blue and white Italianate pastoral scene framed by an Imari-style floral border. Produced in earthenware and porcelain by Copeland Spode, it became one of the most classic transferware designs in British ceramic manufacturing.

Traditional transferware was manufactured by engraving a copper plate with a pattern, which was printed onto tissue paper using cobalt blue ink. The tissue was then carefully transferred onto the unglazed earthenware piece prior to glazing and final kiln firing.

Authentic pieces often feature underglaze backmarks, such as impressed or printed Copeland Spode maker marks, alongside pattern numbers or date letters. Antique examples display characteristic cobalt transfer depth, light crazing, and hand-applied detailing.

Displaying individual pieces inside a modern glass dresser or mounting serving platters on a wall creates a dramatic focal point. Combining classic transferware plates with neutral modern linens balances traditional patterning with contemporary simplicity.

Hand washing in warm water with a gentle liquid soap is recommended to preserve the glazed surface and underglaze transfer. Avoid washing antique earthenware in modern dishwashers to prevent heat stress, micro-cracking, and chipping.
