Meissen began producing porcelain bird figures in the early 18th century under master modeller Johann Joachim Kandler, who studied live specimens to achieve naturalistic forms. This tradition of detailed avian modeling continued into the 19th century, resulting in highly decorative figures that remained popular across European collector circles.

These figures were produced from hard-paste porcelain, a mixture of kaolin and petuntse fired at high temperatures. The individual components were cast or press-moulded, hand-assembled, fired, and subsequently decorated using overglaze enamel paints before undergoing a final lower-temperature glaze firing.

Authentic pieces generally feature the factory mark of two crossed swords painted in underglaze blue on the underside. Additionally, 19th-century production typically includes incised model numbers, impressed press-numbers, and high-precision brushwork in the hand-painted enamel details.

Porcelain bird models are commonly placed symmetrically on a sideboard, within a glazed display cabinet, or on a mantelpiece. Pairing them with modern linear furniture or botanical artwork highlights their sculptural silhouettes while introducing historical craftsmanship to the interior.

Regular dusting with a soft, dry camel-hair brush is recommended to clean delicate areas without snagging. Avoid immersing porcelain with delicate hand-painted enamels in water, and keep figures away from structural vibration or extreme thermal shifts.
