Description

This magnificent Blue & White Transfer Printed Stand, decorated with the Lanje Lijsen Pattern, dates from circa 1820.

It measures an impressive `13.5 inches (34.5 cm) in diameter.

Lanje Lijsen is Dutch for 'Pretty Lady'. The Pattern is also known as The Jumping Boy.

The Stand bears both the printed and impressed Spode Factory Mark and an impressed number 9.

The condition is good. There is no restoration.

The Lanje Lijsen or Long Eliza pattern originated from 17th-century Chinese Kangxi porcelain depictions of slender figures in garden settings. British potteries, including Spode, adapted these Chinoiserie motifs during the Regency period for copperplate transfer printing onto earthenware.

Pieces were typically crafted from pearlware or white earthenware clays. Cobalt oxide was used for the underglaze blue pigment due to its stability at high kiln temperatures, sealed beneath a clear lead glaze.

Authentic Spode ceramics from this period often feature impressed or printed maker marks on the base, such as SPODE in small capital letters, along with distinct cobalt blue transfer clarity and characteristic glaze pooling around the foot rim.

A large transferware charger can be displayed upright on a wooden plate stand on a sideboard, positioned on a mantelpiece, or mounted to a wall using specialised wire hangers to create a focal point.
