This nineteenth-century Chinese and Tibetan altar table belongs to the Qing Dynasty style, manufactured from dark brown hardwood with a polished lacquer finish. The console features a flat rectangular top terminating in everted scrolls, resting on upright supports with carved side panels, openwork fretwork, and block feet. Minor surface wear and marks are visible across the timber, reflecting its age and history. The piece measures 83 cm high, 133 cm wide, and 35 cm deep, sitting neatly against a narrow wall space or hallway. It fits well in a gentleman's library or any reception room within a modern or traditional interior setting.

FAQs

Traditionally placed in domestic reception halls or temples, altar tables were used to display ancestor tablets, incense burners, and ceremonial offerings during religious rituals.

Craftsmen utilised dense regional hardwoods, joining structural components with precise mortise-and-tenon joints without relying on nails or modern metal fasteners.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-chiseled joinery, smooth age-related wear on contact points, and natural variations in the timber grain and finish.

The narrow, elongated profile functions effectively as a hall table in an entryway, a serving surface in a dining room, or a console behind a sofa.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a quality natural beeswax sparingly while maintaining stable indoor humidity levels.
