The George IV period, spanning from 1820 to 1830, bridges late Regency and early Victorian design, characterised by a revival of classical motifs, robust proportions, and the frequent use of dark, highly figured timbers such as mahogany and rosewood.

These tables were typically constructed from solid timbers and veneers of mahogany or walnut, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawers, rule joints on the drop leaves, and sturdy central pillars supported by platform bases or swept legs.

Authenticity is indicated by period-appropriate construction methods such as hand-sawn timber marks, old secondary woods like pine or oak in drawer linings, traditional patina, and minimal use of modern machine fixings.

A dark wood occasional table brings warmth and textural contrast to modern spaces, functioning effectively as a versatile bedside unit, a compact writing surface, or an accent piece next to a minimalist sofa.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, and nourish the wood periodically using traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone-based polishes.
