This Chinese low or kang table dates to the 1900 period and fits a traditional Chinese style. Constructed from figured rosewood and hardwood, it displays a rich dark brown colour with a smooth finish and a polished sheen on the timber. The rectangular top has moulded edges and a central floating panel, resting above an intricate openwork trellis carved apron and frieze. Four curved cabriole legs support the frame, terminating in detailed carved claw feet that rest directly on the surface below. Minor surface wear is visible across the wooden grain, reflecting its age and history of use. Measuring 36 cm high, 100 cm wide, and 42 cm deep, this compact coffee table fits well in a gentleman's library, a drawing room, or a living area as a central display platform. It serves effectively as a low coffee table for holding books, ornaments, or tea services, or functions as a decorative accent piece placed before a sofa or against a wall.

A Kang table is a traditional Chinese low-level table designed to be placed atop a raised heated brick platform, known as a Kang, or on a daybed. These tables were utilised for dining, writing, and serving tea in classical East Asian living spaces.

Traditional Kang tables are crafted from dense tropical hardwoods, including rosewood, zitan, and huanghuali. They utilise complex floating-panel tops and interlocking mortise-and-tenon joinery, constructed without nails or glue to accommodate seasonal timber expansion.

Authentic pieces feature precision mortise-and-tenon joinery, substantial timber weight, and hand-carved relief detailing along the aprons and legs. Natural wood grain variation and age-appropriate surface patination are key indicators of period construction.

In contemporary interiors, a Kang table functions as a low-profile coffee table or a central display platform. Its low height pairs well with modern low-slung sofas, minimalist seating arrangements, or textured area rugs.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and avoid placing the table near direct heat sources or in fluctuating humidity. Apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the wood grain and protective finish.
