This French painted console table dates from 1890 and follows the Louis XVI style. It is constructed from timber with a painted finish, combining a dark top surface with grey painted framework. The piece stands on fluted tapering legs decorated with carved rosettes at the top, supporting a curved stretcher that meets at a central finial. Beneath the dark top, a guilloche-carved frieze runs along the front. Signs of age appear in the distressed grey paintwork across the carved mouldings and turned elements. Measuring 100 cm high, 141 cm wide and 91 cm deep, the table suits placement against a narrow wall space in an entrance hallway, living room or dining area. The console provides a display surface for lamps, books or decorative items while maintaining a slim profile within interior settings.

Originating in 18th-century France, Louis XVI style console tables feature Neoclassical elements such as straight, fluted tapered legs, carved rosettes, guilloche friezes, and balanced symmetry inspired by classical Greco-Roman architecture.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as beech, oak, or walnut, coated with painted gesso finishes, and frequently fitted with marble tops or painted wooden surfaces.

Look for structural markers including natural wear on the gesso paint layers, hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, subtle variations in hand-carved detail, and historical oxidation on the underside timber.

Position the table in an entryway or hallway beneath a large mirror, pairing the patinated painted surface with minimalist ceramics or architectural table lamps to create a balanced contrast.

Dust the frame regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water or harsh solvent cleaners that could strip the original painted gesso finish; apply clear microcrystalline wax sparingly to protect the timber.
